#OpMalaysia?

At approximately 11.00pm, 16 June 2011, several web servers belong to Government of Malaysia (GOM) experienced massive denial of service (DoS) and believed to be maliciously attacked. It is widely circulated that a virtual community of hacktivist called ‘Anonymous’ is behind this attack based on a poster posted on the Internet calling their community to join a chatroom created in Internet Relay Chat (IRC) and launch attack on GOM’s main website – http://www.malaysia.gov.my/ .

What triggers it?

Government decision to block several websites suspected to be used by Malaysians to share or download pirated and illegal media such as movies, songs, etc. Its escalated even more when Anonymous claimed that GOM also blocked Wikileaks websites, which is completely untrue.

How the incident unfolds?

9 June 2011 – Leaked letter from Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commision (MCMC) demanding that all Internet Service Provider (ISP) block several popular websites such as Megaupload, The Pirate Bay, etc, used to host pirated and illegal media.

Appears on ‘Only In Malaysia’ Facebook page.
